Barre, Vermont, in 1917 was a granite city in the middle of a world war. The United States entered the First World War in April of that year, and in Barre the effects reached the quarries and cutting sheds as young men left for military service and employers worried about losing skilled stonecutters. Granite from the Barre quarries still went out by rail to customers across the country, and the valley along the Stevens Branch remained crowded with derricks, sheds, and freight yards. Residents who looked up at the hillsides would have seen the quarry faces that gave the town its reputation, and they would have known the place mainly as a producer of cut stone, with its fortunes tied to building and memorial work.
