Barre, Vermont, in 1917 was the center of the American granite trade, with quarries on the hills above town and sheds along the streets where stonecutters shaped monuments and building stone for markets across the country. The industry drew large numbers of Italian, Scottish, and other European immigrants, and their churches, clubs, and union halls gave the city a mix of languages and loyalties that townspeople argued about in local politics. The United States entered the First World War that spring, and Barre's granite workers, many of them skilled craftsmen, were soon weighing the war's demands on their labor against their own unions and wages. Burnhams Meadow, shown here, was one of the open spaces on the edge of the working city, where residents gathered for outdoor events and looked out over the growing town and its quarry-scarred hills.
