Brattleboro, Vermont, in 1917 was a mill and shop town on the Connecticut River, and that year the United States entered the First World War, which reached the town quickly. Residents bought Liberty Bonds, gave to Red Cross drives, and watched young men leave for training camps as the draft took effect. Many Vermonters still remembered that Rudyard Kipling had lived on the hill above town in the 1890s, and locals often spoke of the visit as a point of local pride. Farm families from the surrounding hills brought produce and dairy goods down to the village streets, which kept the town's markets busy through the war years.
