Brattleboro, Vermont, in 1921 was a river town of several thousand people where the West River meets the Connecticut, with Mount Wantastiquet rising across the water in New Hampshire. The Estey Organ Company, which built reed organs and pianos sold across the country, was the town's largest employer, and its factory buildings lined the riverfront and the rail sidings. Rail lines carried finished goods out and brought in coal, lumber, and raw materials, while the Brattleboro Retreat, a private psychiatric hospital founded in 1834, drew patients and staff from across New England. Residents would have measured their days by the factory whistle and the trains passing through the valley.
