Brandon, Vermont, in 1913 was a village of a few thousand people on Otter Creek in Rutland County, where mills, small factories, and farms supported the local economy. The Rutland Railroad line ran through the valley, carrying lumber, dairy goods, and marble from the region's quarries to outside markets. Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois senator who debated Abraham Lincoln, had been born in Brandon in 1813, and residents took pride in that connection. Civic life centered on churches, the village green, schools, and the Vermont Industrial School, which had been established there in the nineteenth century. This view from Farr Hill shows the village as its residents would have known it, set among the hills of the Champlain Valley.
