Keyes Cottage, Vermont, in 1913 sat in a state whose economy still rested mainly on dairy farming, maple sugaring, and the slate, marble, and granite quarries along its ridges. Summer visitors were becoming a larger part of rural life, and railroads carried city families from Boston and New York to boarding houses and cottages in the hills. The Green Mountain Club had been founded only three years earlier, in 1910, to mark and maintain a footpath along the crest of the range, so hikers were beginning to see these peaks as places for recreation. For local people, though, the mountains remained a working landscape of woodlots, hay fields, and farm roads.
