Rutland, Vermont, in 1913 was a railroad and manufacturing town at the center of a county whose quarries supplied much of the nation's marble. Marble from nearby Proctor and other southern Vermont quarries was shipped out by rail, and the city's rail yards, foundries, and the long-established Howe Scale works gave steady work to families who lived in the neighborhoods rising on the hillsides. Rutland's civic life revolved around its downtown churches, merchants, and city government, while its residents were proud of the marble and iron trades that had made the place a regional center. This view from the Quarter Line area shows the town as its people knew it, with its streets, houses, and factory roofs laid out under the surrounding hills in the years before the First World War changed local industry.
