Southern Londonderry, Vermont, in 1916 was a small farming village in the Windham County hills, where the West River runs through a valley ringed by the Green Mountains. Dairy farming was the mainstay of the town's economy, with milk, hay, and maple sugar as the chief products of its hillside farms, and many families had seen their population decline as young people moved to mill towns and cities downstate and out west. The village's social life centered on its churches, grange hall, and town meeting, and on the seasonal rhythms of planting, haying, and sugaring. Across the country that year, news of the war in Europe filled local papers, though the United States had not yet entered the conflict.
