Rochester, Vermont, a village in the Green Mountains of Windsor County, was in 1912 a community built around hill farming, dairy herds, and the wood lots that supplied local sawmills. Like much of rural Vermont, it had been losing population for decades as families moved to mill towns in Massachusetts and New York and as western farmland drew away younger men. Summer visitors were an important supplement to the town's income, and boarding houses and cottages catered to city people seeking cool mountain air. Residents in 1912 would have known Rochester mainly as a quiet farming town set among the Tweed River valley's pastures and wooded slopes, where town meeting and the grange shaped civic life.
