Highgate Springs, a small village in Franklin County near the Canadian line, took its name from the mineral springs that drew summer visitors in the late 1800s, and by 1920 its economy still rested on those summer trade and on the dairy farms of the surrounding countryside. That year the Eighteenth Amendment took effect nationwide, and the Vermont-Quebec border became a busy route for liquor smuggling, so a hotel here would have been a place where travelers, local residents, and border traffic all crossed paths. Hotels like this one served as stops for rail passengers and motorists, and their guests often came for the springs, the lake country, and the quiet of a rural border village.
