Barre, Vermont, in 1917 was the center of the American granite trade, a city of quarries and polishing sheds a few miles from Montpelier. Its population was drawn largely from immigrant stonecutters, many of them Italian, Scottish, and Scandinavian, who brought their churches and lodges with them. Finished granite left by rail for monuments and public buildings across the country. That spring the United States entered the First World War, and Barre's men faced enlistment and draft calls even as the sheds ran at full stretch. Burnhams Meadow, shown here, sat within a town whose fortunes rose and fell with the stone.
