Springfield, Vermont, was a machine-tool town in 1927, home to firms such as Jones & Lamson, whose lathes and precision equipment were sold to manufacturers across the country. The town's economy rose and fell with orders for those factories, and its workers and their families made up most of the crowds on the streets. On July 26, 1927, the community marked "Lindbergh Day," a local observance honoring Charles Lindbergh, whose solo transatlantic flight to Paris in May had made him the most famous man in America. That summer, Lindbergh's nationwide tour carried his name into small industrial towns like this one, where residents gathered to celebrate a young aviator who had shown what a single determined man could do.
