This glass negative, dated May 15, 1929, captures Herbert Hoover about ten weeks into his presidency, which began in March of that year. The title, written by the studio on the negative sleeve and not independently verified, ties the occasion to the American Library Association. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio, recorded officials, visitors and public events, so the plate reflects the steady demand for official pictures of the period. Streaks and blemishes visible on the glass stem from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
