The Norfolk & Western Railroad is the place named in this October 4, 1929 glass negative, which pairs Herbert Hoover with a group of surgeons, though the record marks that group's identity with a question mark. Hoover had taken office as president earlier that year, and the National Photo Company, a Washington-based commercial studio, produced many such pictures of officials and visiting groups in that period. Glass plates like this one were a standard medium for press and studio work, and the streaks visible on the plate come from the original coating deteriorating over time rather than from the scene itself.
