Lake Titicaca, which straddles the border between Bolivia and Peru, was already famous in 1915 as the highest navigable lake in the world. Wool from llamas and alpacas, along with potatoes and quinoa grown by Aymara and Quechua families, moved by mule and rail toward markets on the coast and in the mining towns. Steamers crossed the lake between Puno on the Peruvian side and Guaqui on the Bolivian side, connecting the railways that carried goods to the Pacific. Bolivia's export wealth then rested heavily on silver and tin, and the lake towns felt the swings of those markets, while Indigenous communities on the shore kept farming the high plateau under older customs.
