Bras d'Or Lake, the large inland sea at the heart of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, in 1910 supported farms, fishing settlements and small sawmills along its shores. The lake reaches the Atlantic through a narrow channel and the St. Peters Canal, which opened in 1854, so schooners carried lumber, fish and farm produce to market. Cape Breton's heavier economy, however, centered on coal mining and the steel works around Sydney, which drew workers from across the island and from Scotland. At Baddeck, on the lake's western shore, Alexander Graham Bell had only recently finished his experiments with flying machines, a connection that kept the village in the news well beyond Nova Scotia.
