Beinn Bhreagh, the estate of Alexander Graham Bell near Baddeck on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, was in 1910 as much a workshop as a family home. Bell had built the property on a wooded hill above the Bras d'Or Lake, and its grounds held experimental buildings where he and his associates worked on kites, tetrahedral frames, and powered flight. The Aerial Experiment Association had been formed at Baddeck in 1907, and its member J.A.D. McCurdy flew the Silver Dart from the frozen lake in February 1909, the first powered flight in Canada. Baddeck was then a small village of fishermen, farmers, and summer residents, and visiting scientists and reporters came to the estate to see what the inventor was building next.
