In the summer of 1914, Crystal Beach on the north shore of Lake Erie, near Fort Erie, Ontario, was still drawing excursion crowds from Buffalo and across the Niagara frontier, arriving on lake steamers and by interurban rail. The Lake Erie Excursion Company's boats were part of the trade that carried families to the sand, the bathing grounds, and the midway rides. That August, Britain's declaration of war brought Canada into the conflict, and the Dominion began raising the Canadian Expeditionary Force, with recruiting posts opening in towns along the peninsula. Summer pleasure trips continued through the season even as young men from the district began to enlist. For many people living nearby, the park remained a cool, familiar escape from the heat of the orchards and farm towns.
