Toronto's waterfront in 1910 was the working edge of a city that had grown quickly over the previous generation, with its population passing 350,000 by the census that decade. The harbour served lake steamers, grain and lumber shipments, and the freight trains of the Grand Trunk and Canadian Pacific lines, which ran along the shore on reclaimed land south of the old town. Ferries to the Toronto Islands carried residents and weekend visitors out from the foot of Yonge Street, and the bay was crowded with sailing craft as well as commercial vessels. Only a few years earlier the city had been reshaping its lakefront with fill and new rail yards, a project that shaped how the harbour looked and worked for decades afterward.
