Crystal Beach, on the north shore of Lake Erie near Fort Erie, Ontario, was in 1911 a popular summer resort that drew many visitors from Buffalo and other towns across the lake and the Niagara frontier. The lakeshore's sandy beach, bathing houses, and amusement grounds made it a destination for day-trippers arriving by steamer and rail, and the surrounding Niagara peninsula was known for its orchards, vineyards, and farms. That summer, the question of free trade with the United States, or reciprocity, was a central issue in the federal election held in September, and fruit growers in the peninsula had a direct stake in the outcome. For the families who gathered on the sand, though, the park was mainly a place to escape the summer heat.
