Baddeck, on the shore of Bras d'Or Lake in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, was a small village in 1910, where most people earned their living from fishing, farming, and work in the island's lumber trade. Across the bay at Beinn Bhreagh, Alexander Graham Bell had built a summer estate where he continued his experiments in flight and hydrofoil design. Only a year earlier, in February 1909, the Silver Dart, built by the Aerial Experiment Association, took off from the frozen lake near the village, piloted by J.A.D. McCurdy, in the first powered flight in Canada. Local people knew the place as the home of the inventor, and that reputation drew visitors and summer residents to the lakeshore.
