Lake Louise, then still called Laggan by the railway and the nearby community, sat in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta and British Columbia's eastern border in 1907. The Canadian Pacific Railway, which had pushed its line through the mountains in the 1880s, made the spot a destination for travelers from eastern Canada, Britain, and the United States. The company promoted the lake's turquoise water and glaciers, built a hotel on its shore, and brought in Swiss mountain guides to lead climbers and tourists onto the surrounding peaks. Visitors arriving by train could see the valley from the lakeshore and the snowfields above it, which helped turn a remote railway siding into one of the country's best-known scenic stops.
