Winnipeg in 1907 sat at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, and it was in the middle of its boom as the main grain and railway city of western Canada. The Canadian Pacific and Canadian Northern lines ran through it, and immigrants arriving from Britain, Ukraine, and elsewhere in Europe were filling the city's neighborhoods, pushing the population sharply upward within a single decade. Grain elevators, rail yards, and wholesale warehouses made the downtown the commercial center of the Prairies, and land speculation ran high as new subdivisions spread across the flat country. A panoramic view from that year captures a city that was growing faster than its streets, schools, and water works could easily keep up with.
