Banff, Alberta, in 1907 was a small resort town in the Rocky Mountains, built around the Canadian Pacific Railway and the tourists it carried west. Alberta had become a province only two years earlier, in 1905, and Banff's economy rested mainly on visitors who came for the hot springs, the scenery, and the railway's hotels, especially the Banff Springs Hotel that the company had opened in 1888. The town sat inside Rocky Mountains Park, which Canada had set aside in 1885 as its first national park, so residents lived with rules about hunting, logging, and development that shaped daily life. Local people would have known Banff chiefly as a mountain getaway on the transcontinental line, where visitors from eastern Canada, the United States, and Britain came to ride, hike, and take the waters.
