Field, British Columbia, sat in the Kicking Horse valley in 1907 as a divisional point on the Canadian Pacific Railway, where crews changed and locomotives were serviced before trains tackled the steep grades over the mountains. The transcontinental line had reached these Rockies in 1885, and the town's livelihood depended on freight, passenger traffic and the company's yards. Travelers who came by train to see the Yoho Valley, with its waterfalls and high peaks, were becoming an important part of the trade, and the railway promoted the region to visitors from across North America and Britain. A field in the Yoho Valley, shown here, was the kind of open ground that drew those tourists into the mountains. Within a few years, engineers would build the Spiral Tunnels nearby to ease the grade for heavy trains.
