Field, British Columbia, was a divisional point on the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1907, where crews changed and locomotives were serviced before trains tackled the steep grades of the Kicking Horse Pass. The town was named for Cyrus W. Field, the American promoter of the Atlantic telegraph cable, and its economy rested on railway work rather than farming or mining. Yoho Valley, just north of town, reached most outsiders through the railway's tourist promotion, which drew visitors from Britain and eastern Canada to see its waterfalls and glaciers. For the people who lived in Field, the valley was less a scenic wonder than a reminder of the mountain grades that kept railway men busy.
