Hamilton, Ontario, was a manufacturing city of the early 1900s, built on iron, steel, and rail traffic at the western end of Lake Ontario. In 1907 its factories and foundries drew workers from across the region, and the city's population was climbing toward the rapid growth that would make it one of Canada's leading industrial centers. This photograph shows the Hamilton Works, a plant whose output of structural and mechanical goods fed the railways and building projects that tied the Dominion together. Residents of the time would have known the city for its smokestacks, its harbor, and the rail lines that carried raw materials in and finished products out, while the shop floors below the skyline provided steady wages for families across the east end.
