In 1907 Laggan was a Canadian Pacific Railway station in the Bow River valley of Alberta, a province only two years old, where the transcontinental main line climbed into the Rocky Mountains. The railway had turned this stretch of the Rockies into a destination, and its hotel at Lake Louise drew visitors from Britain, eastern Canada and the United States who came for mountain air and guided walks. Beyond the tracks, the local economy depended on the railway itself, on the crews and section men who kept it running, and on the travelers who stopped over between trains. The Ten Peaks, a cluster of rugged summits above the valley, were the scenery that drew many of those visitors up the trails.
