Lake Como in 1910 sat at the foot of the Alps in Lombardy, a short rail trip north of Milan. The town of Como, at the lake's southern end, had long been known for its silk mills, which drew workers from the surrounding valleys and tied the district to the wider textile trade. Lakeside villas and gardens had been attracting wealthy visitors since the days of the Grand Tour, and steamers carried travelers from village to village across the water. Italy was still a young kingdom, not yet fifty years unified, and its northern provinces were industrializing faster than the south. Many people along the shore would have known the lake as much for its tourists and gardens as for its mills.
