Lake Como in 1910 was a mix of silk mills, steamboats, and summer villas. The town of Como had long been a center of Italian silk weaving, and its mills drew workers from the surrounding valleys, while steamers carried travelers and freight between Como, Bellagio, and Menaggio. Wealthy visitors from Milan, England, and northern Europe had made the shore a fashionable resort through the nineteenth century, and gardens such as Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi drew steady crowds. Many families in the Lombard hills were also sending sons and daughters abroad, as emigration to the Americas was near its height before the First World War. On the water and along the shore, work and leisure existed side by side.
