Como, at the southern tip of Lake Como in Lombardy, was a silk-manufacturing town in 1910, with its mills and dye works drawing on the region's mulberry and silkworm trade that had shaped local employment for generations. A rail line from Milan, opened in the late 1840s, carried workers and goods in and visitors out, and the funicular to the hillside village of Brunate, running since 1894, gave residents and tourists a quick climb above the rooftops. The lakeshore villas and hotels were already drawing European travelers, many from England and Germany, who came for the water views and gardens. Italy was then a young kingdom, only about half a century unified, and many families in the town still measured their prospects by the silk trade and the summer visitors who filled its quays.
