Pompeii in 1910 was an excavated ruin rather than a living town, its streets and buried houses having been partly uncovered since the eighteenth century under the Bourbon kings of Naples. Mount Vesuvius, which had buried the city in 79 CE, still loomed over the Bay of Naples, and the nearby towns of the Campanian plain depended on vineyards, citrus, and the growing tourist trade that brought visitors by rail from Naples. Italian excavation at the site was then directed by the national government, which had made the ruins a subject of scholarly study and public fascination. The panorama shows the open streets and roofless walls that visitors of the period came to see, a landscape that had changed little since the systematic digs of the late nineteenth century.
