Dawson City, in the Yukon Territory, was in 1915 a town still living off the fading glow of the Klondike gold rush of 1896 to 1899, when its population had swelled to well over 30,000 and then drained away after the strikes played out. By the mid-1910s the streets were quieter, with much of the placer mining carried on by smaller operations and dredges working the creeks along the Klondike and Yukon rivers. The town served as the territorial capital and a river supply point, and steamboats still linked it to Whitehorse and the Alaskan coast during the short summer season. Wooden false-front buildings, many of them rebuilt after the great fires that swept the town in the early years, lined the rising ground above the confluence of the two rivers.
