Copacabana, Bolivia, in 1910 was a lakeside town on the Bolivian shore of Lake Titicaca, more than 3,800 meters above sea level. Its economy rested on the lake trade, with boats carrying goods and passengers between Bolivian and Peruvian shores, and on the steady stream of Aymara and Quechua pilgrims who came to the Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana, a Marian shrine that had drawn devotees for centuries. Many visitors arrived on foot or by boat for the festivals, especially the feast of the Candelaria in early February, when the town filled with crowds, music, and processions. Bolivia's wider politics in these years were dominated by a small governing elite in La Paz and Sucre, while most people in the highlands worked the land and lived far from those debates. For the residents of Copacabana, the lake and the shrine were the center of daily life and the things they would have known the town for.
