Cochabamba, a valley city in central Bolivia, stood in 1915 as one of the country's principal agricultural and trading centers, its fertile valley supplying corn, wheat, and fruit to highland mining towns and to the capital at La Paz. The city had long been connected by road and mule trail to the mining districts of Oruro and Potosí, and its merchants handled a steady traffic of grain, wine, and goods moving between the valley and the altiplano. Bolivia's wider economy in those years rested heavily on silver and then tin, and the Bolivian tin boom was just beginning to reshape the nation's politics and finances. Residents of Cochabamba would have known their town as the "garden city" of the Andes, a reputation tied to its mild climate and orchards.
