The view centers on Mission Point, a shoreline spot on the northeast side of Mackinac Island, where a small boat harbor and wharf served summer visitors. The photograph's title identifies one of the moored vessels as a "Mackinac cat," a local sailing type, which places it among the yachts and pleasure craft that gathered at the island in the early 1900s. By then Mackinac had become a popular resort reached by steamer from Detroit and Chicago, and its harbors were busy with holiday traffic. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American resorts and scenery around 1900 to 1910 for commercial sale.
