West End Boulevard is a tree-lined route on Mackinac Island, the Michigan island in the Straits of Mackinac that was already a popular summer resort by the early 1900s. This c1908 view comes from a glass plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, resorts, and scenery for tourist trade. Visitors then traveled the island mostly by carriage, bicycle, and on foot, and the island has long kept motor vehicles off its roads, so the empty roadway shows how these views were composed for a leisurely, horse-drawn world.
