Along South Boulevard, the road follows the island's southern shore, where the bluffs rise beside the water and the view opens onto Lake Huron. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of resorts and scenic destinations, made this picture around 1906, when Mackinac Island was a popular summer retreat reached by steamer from Detroit and Chicago. The island has long kept automobiles off its roads, so the carriage and foot traffic this scene would have carried still shapes the island's character today. The large glass negative records the sharp detail that the company's commercial views were known for.
