A single birch stands out in this view of Mackinac Island, which sits in the Straits of Mackinac between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country in the early 1900s to record scenic places for travel promotion. By then Mackinac was a popular summer destination, known for its forests, shoreline, and steamboat arrivals. The record dates the negative only to between 1900 and 1906, placing it in the years when the company's views were widely circulated.
