Here the view is taken from the dock, looking up toward two landmarks at once: the Hotel Chippewa and Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island in Michigan's Straits. The island's hotels drew summer visitors by steamboat from Detroit and Chicago around the turn of the twentieth century, and the fort, built by the British in the eighteenth century and later held by the United States, had become a tourist attraction as much as a military site. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views to railroads and travel promoters. The picture captures the arrival point that welcomed those passengers.
