Fort Mackinac sits on a limestone bluff above the harbor of Mackinac Island in northern Lake Huron, a position that made it strategically valuable long before tourists arrived. The British built the fort in the early 1780s, and it changed hands several times before the U.S. Army garrisoned it through the 19th century. The Army left in 1895, and the island became a state park, so by the years this negative was made, the old garrison was drawing visitors who came to see its stone walls and views. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many such views of American landmarks for travelers, made this glass negative as part of that trade.
