Cows graze on the open grounds below Fort Mackinac in this view, a reminder that the island's pastures and military grounds once sat side by side. The fort stands on a bluff above the harbor, first built by the British around 1780, handed to the United States after the Revolution, and rebuilt by Americans after the War of 1812. By the time this glass negative was made, the Army had already left the post, and the island was turning toward its later role as a summer resort and state park. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this to travelers, which is why the scene reads as much like a postcard as a record of military life.
