Arch Rock is a limestone arch rising about 146 feet above the northeast shore of Mackinac Island in Lake Huron, and it is one of the island's best-known natural features. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American scenery and tourist sites in the early 1900s and sold the images as color-tinted postcards and prints. Arch formations like this one were shaped over long periods by wave erosion, and the rock drew steamboat passengers and summer visitors to the island's resort trade. The negative's catalog number and its later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 show how the plate traveled from the company's files into a public collection.
