Arch Rock, a limestone natural bridge rising about 146 feet above the Lake Huron shoreline on the northeast side of Mackinac Island, is the subject of this color photochrom from around 1899. The Detroit Photographic Company made these prints by a process that layered several lithographic stones, each inked in a different hue, to give the scene its painted-looking color. The company's catalog albums served as sales samples, so the picture was meant to show buyers the view and the process at once. Mackinac Island drew summer tourists by steamboat in this era, and its rock formations were among the sights they came to see.
