Mackinac Island is one of the few places in the country where horse-drawn traffic was never fully displaced by the automobile, and this view of its business district shows that world in full swing. The subjects listed in its record point to carriages and coaches moving along a commercial street, the main way visitors and goods traveled on the island in the years between 1890 and 1910. Because motor vehicles were banned on the island, the street would have looked much as it does here, with storefronts lining the road and horses doing the work of daily life. Photographs like this one, catalogued in the Library of Congress, give a clear record of how a resort community operated before the twentieth century changed transportation nearly everywhere else.
