Known for its wind-carved limestone cave and rock formations, the Devil's Kitchen sits along the shoreline of Mackinac Island in northern Lake Huron, where the island's bluffs and cliffs had long drawn sightseers. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American resorts and scenic spots for travelers around 1900 to 1906. The company's catalogs sold views like this one to hotels, railroads and tourists who wanted a souvenir of the place. Its large format gives close attention to the rough stone and the opening of the cavern.
