Main Street on Mackinac Island is the detail that sets this view apart from the island's many other scenes: it shows the commercial heart of a resort community that had no cars, where horses, carriages and foot traffic defined daily life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued commercial views of American towns and resorts in the early 1900s, made this 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative around 1908, when the island was a popular summer destination reached by steamboat from Michigan's lower peninsula. Its shops and storefronts reflect the tourist economy that supported the island through the Victorian and early twentieth-century years.
