Arnold's Dock on Mackinac Island is the focus here, with the steamer Juniata tied up at the left edge of the frame. Steamers like this one were the main link between the island and mainland ports in the early 1900s, bringing summer visitors to a resort where automobiles were banned and horses and carriages remained the usual transport. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1910, documented such scenes across the Great Lakes region for travel promotion. The dock's bustle shows how central the water routes were to the island's economy.
