This view pairs a blockhouse at Fort Mackinac with the shoreline at Mission Point on the island's east side. The fort sits on a limestone bluff above the Straits of Mackinac and passed between British and American control several times in the early 1800s, which is why its wooden and stone defenses reflect more than one military era. By the time this glass negative was made, between 1900 and 1910, the island had become a summer resort reached mainly by steamboat, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this to visitors who came to see its historic sites.
