Few places in the Great Lakes drew summer visitors like Mackinac Island, and this view pairs two of its hotels, the Iroquois-on-the-Beach and the Lake View House, along the harbor. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of views of resorts and scenic spots for rail-travel promotion, made this glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. Motor vehicles were banned on the island in 1898, so the streets and waterfront of that period would have been filled with carriages, bicycles and foot traffic. The picture preserves how the resort looked before the island's later changes.
